The pair’s categorisation of the plays into “comedies”, “tragedies” and “histories” continues to shape modern readings of plays today. The speech compares the world to a stage and life to a play and catalogues the seven stages of a man's life, sometimes referred to as the seven ages of man. Heminge and Condell curated the texts by cross-referencing prompt books, authorial fair copy, and working drafts to ensure it was as accurate as possible. ' All the world's a stage ' is the phrase that begins a monologue from William Shakespeare 's pastoral comedy As You Like It, spoken by the melancholy Jaques in Act II Scene VII Line 139. The First Folio was intended to preserve the plays and correct “bad quartos” – pirated editions thought to be based on flawed constructions from memories. The book was originally owned by the Gordon family, with the name featuring throughout the texts.
